Amritsar (April 30, 2024 Tuesday): After more than two months, parents of Waris Punjab De (WPD) chief Bhai Amritpal Singh on Tuesday lifted the protest from the heritage street near Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib here citing that they will focus on the poll campaign for the pro-freedom Sikh leader who is contesting the parliamentary polls from Khadoor Sahib constituency.

Amritpal Singh is contesting the polls from the jail. He lodged to Dibrugarh jail of Assam, along with his nine aides under the alleged black law of National Security Act (NSA). He took the decision after the people of Khadoor Sahib, which is predominantly a Sikh constituency, demanded so.

Along with various Sikh leaders and family members of other Dibrugarh NSA detainees, his parents—Tarsem Singh and Balwinder Kaur visited Sri Harmandar Sahib and did ardas Akal Takht Sahib, where they announced to the end the stir. They prayed for victory of Amritpal Singh.

The protest was started on February 22 with the demand of shifting Dibrugarh NSA detainees to Punjab. It was launched after the detainees’ privacy was being breached by installing hidden cameras in their washrooms in the jail and human rights were being violated.

Bibi Paramjit Kaur Khalra, wife of slain human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra who raised the issue of human rights violation in Punjab on global level and was killed in the Police custody, also joined the ardas and extended support to the candidature of Amritpal.

In 2019 parliamentary elections, Bibi Khalra also contested elections from Khadoor Sahib. Though she did not win but got sizeable number of votes. She got 2,14,489 votes and stood third. “This is not merely an election. This is a Dharam Yudh Morcha. We are going to contest the battle for religion. This is a battle for human rights. So, burying all the differences, we all should join this battle which is backing the cause of Bandi Sikhs languishing in the jail. We should not get trapped by other parties and back the side of justice”, she added.
